iPhone X: Dope or Nope?

What costs 89,000 INR, has no home button and scans your face? It can only be one thing: the most anticipated new iphone in years.

The iphone X (pronounced "TEN", not "ecks") is the biggest overhaul of the iphone since the first one a decade ago. Boasting and edge-to-edge screen and a new design, it also does away with the fingerprint scanner in favour of a new facial recognition system called face ID.

The phone went on sale on November 3,2017. I've been using it for a day, so it's too early for a full review, but here are some of my first impressions.

The design takes a backseat, but that's a good thing!
Let's admit it, iphones had started to look outdated. The iphone 8, still made on the 3 years old iphone 6 design, made it difficult to distinguish between them from the front view angle. The iphone X , though, is different with its OLED display panel running to all four corners, letting it fit a larger display into a normal sized phone unlike the gigantic Samsung Gnote 8.

From the moment you pick it up, it's the screen that pop's out. You can barely notice the chassis of the phone. But the hardware takes a backseat to the software on the display.

One annoyance about the design? the rear camera !
the iphone X has a dual camera setup just like the iphone 7 plus and 8 plus, which is vertically placed on the new iphone. The camera bumps out which means when placed on a flat surface, the iphone X literally wobbles as a pivot on the rear camera.

The rear camera on the iphone X just sticks out more than the previous generations.

FACE ID: It really does work!

If there's one feature that sets the iphone X apart is the FACE ID which is a successor to the previous TOUCH ID.  The variety of sensors and cameras on the front of the phone create a "3D" map of your face on set-up, then checks your real face against it every time you want to unlock your phone.
And it really works Outstandingly. Apple's demo flopped on the stage and didn't convince me in the demo area. but i gotta mention, it worked every time for me. Setup's quite easy, we don't need to hold the phone right at your face, it also works when lying flat on the table and you're looking at it from an angle. The tru-depth camera system even identifies your face with glasses or some other accessories.

Facial recognition changes a lot more than just unlocking your phone

While the main point of the iphone's facial recognition system is to unlock your phone, replacing the touch ID, it also enables using apple pay with your face and a lot of other clever things. For example, when your screen is locked and you have an imessage notification, the preview of what is the content of the message until and unless you look at it and the phone recognizes its you.

The home button is no great loss

The home button has been a staple of the iphone since the first one and also a distinguishing feature of an iphone, but has been removed from the iphone X to allow for more screen space. And to be honest, i can live without it.
instead, you simply swipe from the bottom to go home, swipe halfway and hold for multitasking and swipe left or right from the bottom to switch between apps. It sounds a bit complicated, but after half a day, you'll forget the home button existed.

The screen looks glorious! The iphone X has what's called a "Super Retina" display, which is Apple talk for the first iphone display using OLED technology. This means colours pop out better, blacks are blacker, and everything just looks brighter. And there's no denying it, it really does look fantastic. Up there with the best screens i've seen on a phone and a definite step up from previous iphones, which start to look just a little drab in comparison. i definitely feel i would be able to watch a full film on this, but there's one hiccup there......

The notch is going to divide opinionThe iphone X's screen has an unusual shape because of the Tru-depth camera system at the front (see image above) which cut into the display to create what has been termed "The Notch". A small indent that the top of the screen wraps around on the left and right , its certainly the most.....unique screen shape I've ever seen. For most things, its actually been designed in pretty intelligent way; indicators like battery and cellular networks just appear on either side of the notch. The main comes when you're watching full screen photos or videos, its appears like someone has taken a bite out of that media content.

Animoji are great fun- but feel like gimmick (especially the poop emoji)
This what the billion dollar R&D has brought us too- you can pretend to be the poop emoji. The iphone X's "Animoji", which include several animals, an alien and a robot, track 5,000 muscles on your own face, using the same sensors that powerful facial recognition. More in-depth review after i get to play more with that, but for now they seem fun and a bit of child's play.
From this we come to an end and it's for you to decide iPhone X: Dope or Nope? Comment down below!
